I got pretty complacent with this year’s quality. And then along came Jojo Rabbit, to slap me in the face and remind me that the majority of movies this year have been crap.
One day, I’ll get drunk and watch Pearl Harbor and Midway back-to-back.
Not only is Dunkirk visually amazing, but it has a really incredible pacing with tangible tension- without the typical gratuitous violence and R-rating we associate with the genre.
There are some hammy moments that work really well here. However, there is a limit to how much ham one should eat while making a movie-
Troy not only made itself a huge ham sandwich but also added lots and lots of cheese.
There are moments in The Lost City of Z that kept me enraptured but I just wasn’t engaged throughout the entire movie.
As I do with most second viewings, I was watching for technical aspects. Unlike most second viewings, I rewound several scenes more than once because it’s so easy to get absorbed in the characters and story.
